FAQs

What is a Studio School?
Studio Schools are a new state school model for 14 to 19 year olds of all abilities. They seek to address the growing gap between what young people require to succeed in life and the skills and knowledge that the current education system provides. In a country in which most lessons are taught in a traditional way Studio Schools will break new ground in the English education system, offering a pioneering practical approach to learning rooted in the real world.

South Tyneside Studio

South Tyneside has a rich manufacturing history. Once the heart of British heavy industry, at one time a quarter of the world's ships were built in its shipyards.

Future Studio Schools

The Studio Schools Trust aims to establish a network of Studio Schools around the UK and we welcome applications from interested agencies.

What is a Studio School

At a Studio School tutors work with the students to find a learning approach that suits them and their interest. A Studio Schools environment is where everyone is a valuable member of a proactive and motivated team.

The first wave

The first wave of Studio Schools were announced by the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families in 2007. They will open in seven local authority areas across the country over the next two years.

Background

The initial Studio Schools concept paper was published by the Young Foundation in 2006. Developed in close consultation with young people, academics, teachers, employers and local authorities, the paper outlined a radical new school model designed to address the twin challenges of missing skills and youth disengagement.
